Family Day at The Akron Zoo - DeHOFF REALTORS®

The Akron Zoo has been a staple of family fun near Akron homes for sale for decades, with significant expansion since the early 2000s leading to new exhibits, rides for kids, special events, and amenities for visitors to enjoy. Summer is the perfect time to experience a fun, educational family outing to the Akron Zoo, with a busy schedule of special events, summer camps for kids, and many animals to see. Our real estate agents have the key information to help you plan your next family day at the Akron Zoo.

  • Get to Know the Animals
Did you know that the number of animals under the care of the Akron Zoo has increased by 200 percent over the last 15 years? Today, the zoo is home to a diverse collection of animals from both land and sea. The seven categories of animals living at the zoo include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, and even carnivorous plants. There are many rare species to see here, like the Red Panda, Bald Eagle, Sumatran Tiger, Galapagos Tortoise, Giant Pacific Octopus, and South American Sea Nettle, to name just a few.

  • Animal Habitats and Exhibits
All of the animals at the Akron Zoo are cared for in habitats that mimic what they experience in nature. There are 10 distinct habitats to explore, including the Pride of Africa, Wild Asia, Curious Creatures, Legends of the Wild, Penguin Point, Grizzly Ridge, Komodo Kingdom, and Wild Prairie. Many of the zoo's birds are housed within the large Aviary, while plants and animals can be found within the Lehner Family Zoo Gardens.

  • Unique Experiences at the Akron Zoo
For families who want a behind-the-scenes look at the Akron Zoo, some great unique experiences are available this summer. The Rise and Shine Safari, offered on mornings from Friday through Monday, is a tour with experienced staff members that allows you to explore the zoo before it opens to the public. You'll learn all about the habitats, discover how the animals are cared for, and participate in unique, interactive experiences with the animals.

The Get Closer Experience is another great option for an up-close experience with creatures like the Galapagos Turtle, goats, and Animal Ambassadors. Get Closer Experiences also include one-on-one time with a zookeeper. All experiences must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance, so plan ahead.

  • Special Events and Camps for Summer Fun
Summer is a busy time for special events at the zoo, with events for families and some events for adults 21 and older. Popular events include Princess & Pirate Day, Members' Nights, Summer Safari, and Paws & Reflect: Yoga for Conservation. Kids aged 6 through 16 can also be enrolled in the summer ZooCamp, where they'll learn about the zoo, the habitats, and the animals living there through fun, hands-on experiences.

  • Tickets, Parking, and What to Know Before You Visit
The Akron Zoo is open daily April 1 through October 31 from 10:00 am through 5:00 pm, with limited hours in the winter. Admission is $14 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $11 for kids, with online purchasing available. Parking costs $5 per vehicle when purchased on-site or $3 if you purchase parking online before visiting.
