DIY or Professional Renovation: Deciding What's Best | DeHOFF REALTORS

Once you have your new home, the next step is making it exactly how you want it. Our real estate agents can help you find a reliable contractor to do renovation work. On the other hand, maybe you'd rather attempt the job yourself. Is that a good idea? It depends on several factors. Here's how to decide between DIY and professional renovation.

  • Ability and Experience. Some projects, like painting or installing certain types of flooring, are fairly simple and can be done even by beginners. Others, such as installing a major appliance or anything involving your electrical system, should only be performed by a trained professional with proper certification. However, you'll need to use your best judgment for many projects. How confident are you with the tools the job requires, and how much experience do you have with similar projects? Before attempting it, research the project online to see what steps are involved. Does it look simple, or are there parts of it you're not confident about? If there are, then a DIY job could be more trouble than it's worth. Save the hassle and turn it over to a professional.

  • Tools. What kind of tools will it take to complete this project? If it can be done with basic things you already have in your toolbox or can purchase fairly cheaply, then it's a good DIY project. If it requires special equipment costing $100 or more and special training to operate, then it's better left to a professional.

  • Time. How much time will it take to complete the project? How much time are you willing to commit to it? How will you balance the renovations with your regular job? Will you only work on the project on weekends? Will you have the energy/motivation to work on the house after you get home from work? If you have a strict deadline for when you want things completed, or if the renovations will put part of your house out of commission for a period, it might be better to hire a contractor to ensure it gets done quickly. On the other hand, if your timeline is flexible, the work is non-intrusive, or you can get done in a weekend, it would make a good DIY project.

  • Money. What's your budget for this project? How much will it cost to do the work yourself, and how much to hire a professional? If hiring a contractor would cost a lot more, and it's something you're confident you can do yourself, then go for it. Be careful, though. If you don't do the work properly, it can cause damage and other problems in your home. To fix them, you'll have to call a professional anyway, and it will cost a lot more than if you'd just hired them to do the work to begin with.

  • Permits. Certain projects, particularly those on a larger scale, require an official permit—sometimes multiple permits—before they can be attempted. Professional contractors know which jobs require what permits and can obtain them more quickly. If you're unsure if you need a permit or just want to avoid the hassle, hire a professional.
