While nobody ever expects to have a house fire, the truth is that they can happen. The good news is that you can take plenty of steps to reduce your risk of a house fire and ensure you're well prepared in case one does occur. Our real estate agents are ready to share some essential fire safety tips for homeowners.
- Test Your Smoke Alarms
In case of a fire, a smoke alarm should alert you early so you have time to get out of the house. However, you must check your smoke alarms monthly to ensure they're still working. Most have a test button that beeps after you press it for a second. Remember to also change your smoke alarm batteries once a year.
- Establish Your Escape Routes
How would you get out of your house during a fire? Are there two planned escape routes? Take time to review them with your family members. Have everyone walk the escape route a couple of times to keep it fresh in their mind. It's also wise to establish a meeting area outside of your home. It could be down the street in front of a certain park, across the road in a neighbor's yard, or anywhere distinct that family members will remember and be able to access in case of an emergency.
- Burn Candles Safely
Candles can make your home smell amazing, but they are also a fire risk. When you burn candles, make sure they are in sturdy holders. Keep them far away from curtains, blankets, and other fabrics. Always make sure you extinguish a candle before going to bed. Don't leave them burning when you're out of the house, either!
- Store Gasoline Carefully
If you have a can of gas for your lawn mower and other small motors, be careful how you store it. Only use an approved gas can, and keep it in a shed or garage, far from any potential sources of heat like grills or heaters.
- Have Chimneys Inspected
Always have your chimney inspected by a professional in the fall. This way, you'll know it's clear of debris before you start burning wood in the winter. If you suspect your chimney may have a leak or an obstruction, do not use your fireplace until you can have it professionally repaired.
- Install Fire Extinguishers
It's important to have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen. Ideally, you should have one on every floor of your home. Choose the type labeled "ABC." This is the most versatile type of fire extinguisher and should put out any type of fire you happen to have. Review the instructions so you know how to use the fire extinguisher. The acronym PASS helps you remember the steps: Pull the pin, Aim low, Squeeze handle, Sweep side to side.
